an emailed post from BK. it is so lovely to be back in the city with todd.
today was chinatown, soho, red bamboo, rice to riches, a little here in
cobble hill where jill and matt live. one drive by heath ledger’s house,
just for old times’ sake. vegetarian chicken salad sandwiches. (this is
turning into a little list, or a post inspired by carter’s prosaic style.)
nutella breve from the tea lounge. the F train. leather gloves, long
scarves, and fake handbags.

i slid back into brooklyn like an old pair of jeans.

happy new years, everyone. xoxo.

birthday in review…

breakfast in bed…oatmeal gruel (cooked way way too long by my dear husband), but the thought was sweet and the off key bday song made me laugh.

birthday brunch with mom…after ten cups of coffee my already tense mom was a real pain. even my special kir royale didn’t smooth the event. next year i’ll remember that mom and my birthday aren’t the greatest mix. no, i won’t…i do this every year and every year the time with her bums me out and aggravates her. argh

birthday nap with finley…amazing. he is still asleep next to me now. his baby rugby has the collar up. his small hand touches me for reassurance. i sit and watch him, falling in love with each breath. he is the greatest gift of all.

birthday dinner…to be decided. my aunt took a fall yesterday and hit her head hard enough for four stitches. we may eat in with her. or out at the carlyle where they have amazing seared tuna with goat cheese. mmmm.

the new year…or until finley needs to leave, at margee’s. games and beverages with her, taki (her fianc

yesterday, my mother, frustrated with my father, told me how annoyed she was that he never took his cell phone anywhere. she had tried calling him for about an hour with no answer at his work or cell. when she finally got him, he said ‘you didn’t call me.’ she said, ‘yes, i did. multiple times. on your cell and at work.’ his response?

‘oh, my cell phone is in the truck.’

she was pleased at how helpful this was.

now though, now as i sit in the airport at richmond, as i go to empty my pockets at security, as i watch my bags roll through, i realize i still have her car keys with me. for once, they didn’t wait to watch me go through. no one will help me, meaning i have to gather my stuff and race in a giant u-turn with the hopes of catching them.

there is no hope and i don’t try — i had already stood in line for security and killed a bunch of time.

so i call my dad’s cell phone.

don’t worry — it is off.
i call my mother’s. ring ring ring. voicemail. again. same.
clearly, she left her phone at home.

my pity for her has evaporated, though i do hope she can drive her car while she waits for the keys in the mail.

my mom is watching cnn — saddam is being hung tonight.

the entire thing makes me fairly sick. cnn actually has labeled it ‘death of a dictator’. i feel gross. and now cnn says it happened 10 minutes ago. at least they have the decency to not show anything. but still.

am i insane for thinking that he didnt need to be killed? which is a little weird, because i’m not sure how i feel about capital punishment. but this whole thing between him and bush and the world seems to be such an absurd farce, i almost feel bad for the guy. almost.

i have decided that come the first of the year, i am emptying my inbox. right now, i have about 200 mail messages floating in it and i no longer feel the need to deal with them. so im going to dump them into a folder and start the new year with a clean inbox.

i doubt any of these emails are things people are expecting replies to at this point, but if you happen to be one of them, let me know.

the post christmas….something.

i feel like i am living in a blender, bouncing to and fro while avoiding the blades at the bottom.

let’s see if i can quickly sum up things that are going on:

1. i had a wonderful christmas and got all i could have asked for, gift-wise, and then more. and i gave presents i was quite happy to deliver. so everyone wins.

2. carter and mike are driving across the country as i type this. they left today and will arrive in mountain view on the 30th. they are spending the night in memphis tonight, taking (i think) the 40 across the country. if you can stand outside with a glass of water for them, speak up.

3. i saw ben last night along with his family — mark, jeanie, seth and rachel. while i had seen ben in seattle somewhat recently, i hadnt seen his family in years and years.

4. i drove to c’ville this afternoon and had lunch with petunia. it was nice to see her, though the visit was horribly short and did not include the drinking i had previously hoped for.

i think that is a basic list of what i have been up to the last several days. its been crazy but lovely seeing the people i have — and more in the next few days.

whew.
