The Sopranos is great. You’re seriously missing out. I personally think that Lost has lost its momentum and though The Sopranos are steady – they have been like that from teh beginning, so I am not as disappointed and frustrated with it like I am with Lost. Try to give it another chance!

Dirt, Rescue Me, and especially Battlestar Galactica. Sopranos is fine if you like stinkin’ underbelly every week. Lost has lost some mo’, but it’s still interesting (even with this past week…ugh).

The best TV on TV. I’ve never even given Lost the time of day. Maybe I just like th underbelly. But I also liked Six Feet Under and Deadwood and Rome. The only night I watch TV is Sunday, perhaps that explains things.

If you tried to condense Lost or the Wire into seven minutes with a monotone voiceover it would look just as boring and ridiculous as this. Sopranos might not be what it was in the first three seasons but it’s still great TV.

Lost is…lost, totally unfocused, clearly not building towards a satisfying conclusion. Which is a shame because they had a great premise and for a while managed to weave an interesting tapestry of intersecting stories. I’m watching it more out of habit now than anything else.

The Wire is far and away the best TV everand as such it’s pretty much unfair to compare anything else to it.

ok, ill shelf the lost discussion (and even the wire discussion) for now.

i was saying that, within this little summary:
1. the number of plotlines and cliches that are thrown out is just way too high and
2. it becomes clear that there isn’t an over-arching narrative to the sopranos, but rather just a string of soap-opera incidences.

and i’m breaking my rule — i do not believe the same holds true for lost or the wire. nor any good tv drama.

and that, in a nutshell, is why i never made it past the third episode of the sopranos. three times.

i tried, i really did. but it didn’t impress me in any way.

Too bad you missed the point. Completely. What you describe as cliches are life, my friend. Life is not at all the adventure portrayed in most other shows. Life is repetitive and largely boring. We look to the next thing and the next thing is mostly the same as the last. You have posted about the fact that your own life is getting all too familiar on a day-by-day adjudication. This is life. This is The Sopranos. This is why it is among the best that ever is.

Good TV is not about representing life perfectly. Otherwise, we would see people using the bathroom all the time instead of just when it revolves around a plot point.

I don’t believe I missed any point — good TV is not life, nor is it cliche.

Ok, but you represented that the repition portrayed in this trailer was the reason you didn’t like it. Taking a dump and putting that on the screen wasn’t a part of the equation you mentioned. That is a Red Herring. It is cool that it isn’t for you; I was just admonishing you that the idea that there is a bit of repitiion in this show is much more lifelike than most of the shows I’ve seen, including other HBO shows. Since my take on this show, perhaps more than others, is that it is meant to show the circle of despair that someone in that type of lifestyle lives in I think that this repitiion is key and thus makes this great TV – it is great because it succeeds in doing what it sets out to do.

BTW, is this the type of interaction you wanted when we were discussing all of this a few weeks ago?

I think this speaks to why I’m not attracted to the show. I have to be somewhat interested in/able to invest in the characters. I completely loathed Seinfeld for the same reason. Everytime someone made a completely wrong, inane choice, it destroyed that suspended disbelief that helps to watch a show. I just couldn’t connect with choices and thinking so disimilar to my own. this is awesome. this HAS TO HAPPEN. i am 100% serious. we need more giant robots roaming our deserts. i like it better when i thought it was aimless, and not part of a show, but still… rad as fuck. like sentinels. why hasn’t the government gotten involved? surely they would want large robots to protect our borders. best thing ever. again, this HAS TO HAPPEN.

Hmm, nope. I’m familiar with the smell of manure. This wasn’t it. And yes, I really love (read: hate) a guy who can be having an affair while impeaching somebody else for less. We have a president who is now responsible for an intracable war, blowing the budget surplus, spying on American citizens, torture, and a whole host of other things, but him we can’t impeach. Unless he were to get a blow job. Then he’d REALLY be evil, right?
