Newsweek and Vanity Fair

the sad truth is the writers for vanity fair, which falls into the fashion magazine category i think it is safe to say, are more willing to question what america is doing than those from newsweek, a news magazine. i read a lot these days, especially when finley drifts off in my arms and i am left on our couch within easy reach of our magazine stash. last week i read a good amount of the suri cruz vanity fair. now i bought the magazine, i am willing to admit, to see the baby and read about tom cruz and katie holmes and their odd life. (which was less odd than i'd hoped for…but good enough to keep me reading.) i am prone to hollywood curiosity, especially with babies these days. in reading more of vanity fair, i was pleasantly surprised to discover some real depth to the articles. one article addressed the many parallels between the fall of rome and the events preceding its fall and the united states today. not a new theory (i think american theocracy also hits on this idea), but good writing and thought provoking. and the author even used big words. words the common (intelligent) man would have to think about momentarily before moving on. there was also a great letter from the editor that made me nod and smile. now i could do without all the perfume ads, and the fact that it takes close to 70 pages to get to the table of contents…but at least there are a few good articles. and the writers write for an intelligent audience. newsweek however….well tripp made that case. but too add one more morsel. in the latest issue, the foley one, there is a pie chart of why shanna moakler is famous. tell me this, why do we need to know? on the same page the question WWMD (what would Madonna do). Argh!
now on to reading the economist.
