this past saturday me and my parents went out to dinner with my granny to celebrate her birthday. my first trip down to the slip/bottom since i've been home, not counting a quick fly through a few weeks ago at night, and everything looked good.
during dinner my granny admitted that she was going to vote for kerry, since she had spent a few hours with my uncle david listening to him explain the state of american politics, both domestic and global. my two parents, two blind followers of bush i am ashamed to say, as are many members of my family on both sides, immediately start spitting out vague declarations of kerry's incompetence, bush's intelligence, and other vague claims that were so vague i almost picked the table up and threw it through the window. instead i just told my granny not to listen to them, told my parents to stop bullying my granny, and expressed my gratitude that at least someone else in the family besides my sister kate was a smart person in not supporting bush.
the first few hours tonight, of election coverage, i watched with my parents. then i played some neverwinter nights for an hour. then i stopped playing. hardly any states had reported, and my parents were still upset and freaking out in their conservative ways about the fact that virginia still hadn't been announced, while shooting me shifty sidelong glances, knowing i had supported their enemy. i was tired, having woken up early after staying up late, so i took a nap.
i woke up later, close to ten, and bush had a lead, although the important states that i had noticed were still up in the air. then florida went to bush.
it's now three in the morning and it's neck and neck. basically the issue seems to come down to ohio, which won't finish up for at least another day if not longer.
all i can say is, i hope that everything possible is done to create the embarassing situation that the republicans did in florida four years ago. i hope they draw it out as long as it takes. i'm so angry.
i'm especially angry because people on the various channels tonight keep saying that democrats are bad at giving the people what they want. this is funny to me. because really what they are saying is that the majority of americans are ignorant, close minded, bigoted people. several commentators have ridiculed the democrats at thinking that americans might be open minded when it comes to homosexuality, peaceful when it comes to violence and gun control, progressive when it comes to poverty/healthcare/etc, and ethical when it comes to issues of sex and choice(creationism is a weak fallback for an ethical line, for many reasons; and bush needs to look up ethics in the dictionary as well).
during my trips to europe while i was living in rabat, as well as dealing with the europeans that lived in and visited rabat, i always said that i was american. but i immediately was required to defend myself in a universal political sense. i gladly did this.
when economists predict china's supremacy in the global market within twenty years, and the states falling behind europe(which it already has), i'm not surprised. the thing that surprises me is that it's economists that are saying this. our current political trends are weakening us from the inside as well as from the outside. at least the rich people will enjoy themselves, regardless of the hell and highwater they've steered their children and grandchildren towards.
peace
