Each fall this town empties, leaving me
drained, standing on the dock, waving bye-
bye, the white handkerchief
stuck in my throat. You know the way Jesus
rips open his shirt
to show us his heart, all flaming & thorny,
the way he points to it. I’m afraid
the way I miss you
will be this obvious. I have
a friend who everyone warns me
is dangerous, he hides
bloody images of Jesus around my house
for me to find when I come home—Jesus
behind the cupboard door, Jesus tucked
into the mirror. He wants to save me
but we disagree from what. My version of hell
is someone ripping open his
shirt & saying,
look what I did for you.

(That was the last somebody-else’s poem, I promise.)

Hey, throw up what you want to throw up. I’m not complaining. But Ray might, he’s a real asshole like that.

I know, right? Not a day goes by that I don’t think about what a jerk Ray can be, always going on about his “loving family” and “the rewards of a life well lived.” Always reminding us of everything that “we all have” that “should be treasured.” And leaving kind and helpful comments on “my posts.”
Wow. I made myself dizzy with all those quotation marks and all that attempted internet sarcasm. Head rush!

that ray, always boasting about how his clever delight of a daughter eats til she urps and says ‘poop’ while pointing at past presidents. it makes me feel bad that these things are some of my biggest accomplishments of day to day life at age 25 and his little one already has them down.

Oh, so now everybody’s just LINING up for me to kick their arses, eh? You’ll be ‘treasuring’ my foot up yer asses!
And then, THEN, I’ll set my little ankle biters on you. Reed’ll have fun identifying organs like “spleen” and “kidney.” And did I mention that just the other day Rebekah learned jujitsu…
