So, a lot of people don’t know what I do. I’m a social justice organizer. And the people who know the title often don’t understand what the work entails.
Here is a great article about what organizing entails day-to-day, and how it differs from the politics that most people see on TV, or the direct actions that they expect (ie, marches and sit-ins) when they think of community activism. It primarily addresses candidate work–which has significant differences from the broader, nonpartisan issue-based work that social justice organizers take on–but it’s a good outline of what some parts of the job entail. And it takes a good long view of movement building, which I like.
So there you have it. My job, or some version of it, in a nutshell.
