I’m at the Portland Airport, getting ready to board a plane to Burbank. I’m taking my first honest to god vacation since graduating–about 20 months ago. I get to visit with my niece, brother, and sister-in-law, go to Le Switch’s CD release party tomorrow night, and hang out in another city. But first, I’m spending this afternoon with a former coworker/current favorite person ever.
He left the organization where I work just a few weeks ago, and moved to LA to work on the No on 8 campaign, and to be closer to his partner. Strangely, remarkably, it’s one of the few friendships I’ve had that’s smoothly transitioned through a big departure. When I transferred to Brown, I left behind most all of my friends in Portland. (Out of sight, out of mind, I suppose.) And when I left Providence, I lost contact with just about everyone, and have built a network that’s almost entirely new in Portland. I hope this is the one to stick. I hope these are the people that never slip away for too long.
The friend I’ll see today is a fantastic person, an excellent influence, and a great time. After he left, another coworker said, “I think the three of us will be friends forever.” I hope that doesn’t just fade into some yearbook cliche.
Well. This has been an especially undirected post. All this is to say that I’m leaving Portland and won’t be back until Thursday. Wish me a good trip.
In other news: creepy! The owner of Manhunt.com contributed the maximum to John McCain’s campaign. I just choose to believe that McCain has a preexisting relationship with the site. Maybe even a preexisting account. Who wants to make the search?
