bitzao said he hadnt been to the rauschenberg show yet…and i dont think i posted about it, but i saw it over break. great show. great great show. combines. fantastic. i only rolled my eyes at once, and that was a later piece that was gigantic and totally self-absorbed. i hate pretense. but the show really was great. im kind of obsessed with anyone who was involved with black mountain in the 50s, so i didnt have a ton of skepticism coming in. though i enjoyed the combines that hang like paintings more than the sculptures. but all good. while i was there, i also saw a fra angelico exhibit. GREAT. the only ive ever seen. and really beautiful. but that, unfortunately, is gone. unfortunate because it was a good contrast/comparison to the rauschenberg. some interesting overlap: the triptychs, the flattening of space, the use of color.
