It's been a running joke among Tripp, Andru, and I that record shopping is our longest running girlfriend, but we've never really elaborated much on why. This weekend Tripp it came up and Tripp and I came up with four or five reasons together in front of Rachel and a somewhat stunned girl working the register at Satellite Records. After a bit more thought I've come up with some more reasons and fleshed it out into a proper list:
The Top Ten Reasons Why Records Are Like Girlfriends
10. They'll cost you so much money over the course of your life that it's scary to add it up in your head.
9. While they, theoretically, could someday end up paying for themselves they probably never will.
8. You're likely to spend large portions of your life searching for the right one.
7. They make a lot of noise, but ultimately just say the same things over and over again.
6. Eventually, as they get older and out of shape you'll be want to replace them with newer ones.
5. At home they take up way too much space and they're even more of a bitch to travel with.
4. Even when you're not getting much use out of them you'll find them hard to part with.
3. You can't touch either of them in certain places until you get to know them really well.
2. From the moment you find one you like, all you'll be thinking about is putting your needle in the groove.
1. You love them with all your heart.
