This spring/summer keeps getting better and better. I'm discovering exciting new music, watching cool flicks, and buzzing on some killer concert vibes already.
The Dizze Rascal show a couple weeks back was even better than expected. I knew Dizzee had flow. I mean I own the albums and they're undeniably exciting and fun, but his live show just addded a whole new dimension. I've seen plenty of hip-hop acts by big names, Jay-Z, Busta Rhymes, Outkast, Wu-Tang, the Roots and none of them deliver live with the lyrical precision and sheer enthusiasm that Dizze displayed at Irving Plaza. Total control. Over beats, a capella, coupled with a support guy, it didn't matter. He just owned the moment. Props to Irving Plaza as well for delivering, yet again an amazing sound. If there's a better place to see a live show (of any kind or genre) I haven't been there.
Reasons number Twelve and Thirteen (1-11 here) that this spring/summer is kicking ass:
13. Pigfest on May 21st, I'm squeezing it in between Thievery Corp at Twil on the 20th and a Met game on the 22nd. We're seperating the men from the boys with this one. Jesse and I are trying to get a posse together for it, are you in? Five hours unadulterated gluttony. This will probably roll years off your life expectancy, but if anything makes it worthwhile it's craft beer, pulled pork, barbecued chicken, and live music. "My soul is prepared Dr. Jones. Is yours?"
12.M.I.A. - live at S.O.B.'s on June 7th. The link points to a site where you can download the mixtape Piracy Funds Terrorism by her and Diplo, her DJ. Do yourself a favor and take the whole thing before it disapears. Her label gave the tape away for free so don't get your panties in a knot about copyright. You should also find her official debut album Arular. I haven't been this excited about a debut album since the first time I heard Rage Against the Machine (I still remember that day vividly).
