I swore I was done with political posts, but am I the only one that finds it hysterical that the Bush administration wants to rebrand the War on Terror? The new name is supposed to be "the global struggle against violent extremism." Not that it's a bad idea per se, it's just that when I think of eliminating extremists the Republican party is more or less the group right at the top of my list. (OK, that's not fair, they're third, right behind Al Quaeda, and Scientoligists).
Top ten extremist tactics undertaken by the Bush Administration, the Republican party ,or their surogates:
10. The elimination of due process for suspected terrorists held at Guantanamo Bay. They're not entitled to the rights of citizens. They're not entitled to the rights of foreign nationals . They're not entitled to the rights of established by the Geneva Convention. What are they? Foreign combatants! What rights do they have? None!
9. The illegal rendition of suspected terrorists to foreign countries for the sake of torture.
8. The arrest of anyone and everyone on the sidewalks during the Republican Convention. "Just carrying your grocerys home? Tough shit - you're going to jail."
7. The unmasking of a CIA agent as a means of political retaliation. "That'll teach you to criticize our lies."
6. The smearing of the names and reputations of our nations veterans. Never mind that John McCain is a war hero - let's use a push poll to inform racist voters about his interracial family. "Who in the hell does he think he is adopting a child of a different race anyway?"
5. The dismantling of thirty years of environmental enforcement and the suppresion of good science in our government. "Oh, what's that you're kids have asthma? Tough shit - it's too expensive for coal burning power plants to scrub their emitions. Stop complaining and we'll give your inhaler back."
4. The utter disregard for due process in the Terri Schiavo case. Why let years of medical opinions, judicial oversight, and careful deliberations stand in the way of a self righteous anger and legislation that contravenes your own political philoshy (Remember - the Republican party is the one that wants a small government that stays out of the decisions made by citizens and their families).
3. Abu Ghraib.
2. Looking the other way while genocide takes place in the Sudan.
1. Lying to the public in order to justify a the war in Iraq and then using the war as a marketing opportunity in an election year in which they again tarnished the reputation of a war veteran.
