thinking a little about patriotism today.
when i visited steve and rachel in pittsburgh not long ago, rachel brought up the idea of the foreign service. her points were valid, and in many ways, it would be the ideal career change for me, i know. travel, adventure, outrageous benefits, far better pay and/or prestige than i could ever hope for as a public-school teacher. but of course, as a member of the foreign service you’re a representative of the US government–and one of the stated requirements for foreign service work is your public support and active advocacy of current government policy and the united states in general.
for the time being, not a job i could take on with any good conscience.
