Then I stumbled upon the plot of Dan Brown’s Angels & Demons, because he staged some of the book around at the LHC site:
“The story involves a conflict between an ancient group, the Illuminati, and the Roman Catholic Church. A film adaptation is due for release on May 15, 2009. The plot follows Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon, as he tries to stop what seems to be the Illuminati, a legendary secret society, from destroying the Vatican City with the newly-discovered power of antimatter.”

According to wikipedia this is book’s “Premise”:

I didn’t know I had to read this book. However, I do. This is clear. In fact, I might need to start a bookclub for this.

Also: Why would a super secret organization brand anyone? Members or victims? That’s the kind of crap that leads to, well the end of your secret for one thing.
