yesterday i gave my library research skills class this big culimnating project they have to work on for the next month. it involves some pretty detailed research and a paper on an american state of their choice. i allowed them to select any state except new york, and they had to come tell me which one they chose. i wasn't sure how to react when i had students who told me their state choices were 1) new orleans 2) chicago 3) canada 4) colombia, and 5) amsterdam. as if i need another reason to weep.
