The day of the album is gone unless the musician provides enough value for the fan so that they are willing to pay for an album format. If not the single track is what we will be buying for a very long time to come. It’s up to the musician.

Good Riddance To Albums.

This is from Mashable this evening. And f-you.

Sorry, it’s harsh, but you wrote like 1000 words that I skimmed (admittedly) that mean nothing. I’m tired of people saying that albums are shite, that they don’t matter.

The truth? I want to queue up albums in my iPod; I’m sick of albums being shat on. I like my albums; I want to use that metadata. I can’t rate my albums as a group, nor can I browse them easily like that.

It’s frustrating — I have a zillion songs, but only a handful of albums I truly love. But I can’t work that to my advantage. And you know what? Those albums are great. There is a very real reason I’ve been listening to some of them for decades (“Appetite…”), some for a year at best (“Untrue”). I’m tired of people ragging on albums. At this point, 10 years into mp3s, you’re an idiot enough to buy an album for a single and 10 songs you’ve never heard, you’re getting exactly what you’re paying for. You deserve that.

Use hypemachine, use piratebay, use 100 of the resource out there to hear the song you like.

But don’t rag on albums. Just like anything else, there are sucky ones. But there are also amazing ones.

Hell, what’s your favorite album?

In going through stuff a few weeks (months) ago, I came across a mixtape I was putting together probably in probably 2000. I digitized it and am throwing it up for your enjoyment. It’s from the era of DJ Tripp(p). This one was made when I was living with Goose on Franklin. I never finished it — I think Chrispy got a copy at some point, but it never got finished, just forgotten.

It’s rough and dated, but somehow a little pleasing still. It never got a real name, so I’m calling it “Rau,” which is a terrible mis-spelling of raw. I’m too lazy to think harder right now.

Side A:

Jurassic 5 – Concrete Schoolyard
A Tribe Called Quest – Motivators (Wiseguys Remix)

So back in what seems like another life, I was living in LA, living with Kurt and we were dreaming up a TV show. Then we disagreed over the general tone and lost interest. But I made a mix of the flavor I wanted the show to have. So I’m sharing it.

Now, keep in mind, this little mix CD is several years old now. And it isn’t DJ mixed, it’s just a bunch of tracks.

And what’s on it, you ask? How about this:

1. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club / Love Burns
2. Danger Mouse / Encore
3. The Streets / All Got Our Runnins
4. Franz Ferdinand / Take Me Out
5. LCD Soundsystem / Losing My Edge
6. Oasis / Cigarettes & Alcohol
7. Evil Nine / Crooked (feat Aesop Rock)
8. Adam Freeland / We Want Your Soul
9. Utah Saints / Punk Club
10. The Chemical Brothers / Out Of Control
11. Beck / GHETTOCHIP MALFUNCTION (Hell Yes)
12. Bran Van 3000 / Drinking In L.A.
13. Unrest / West Coast Love Affair

And where is it, you ask? Here. Grab it now, cause I’m probably removing the link soon.

It’s pouring rain. Obama won Iowa. I’m listening to Burial, again, though I have just discovered that I only have one song on my iPod instead of the whole album. I have a deadline next Friday which has the potential to be a mad scramble; it also has the potential to be glorious.

I’m watching rain pool on a windowsill, rippling out like stones in a lake as fat drops shower the green painted metal. The wind is sweeping the falling water across the parking lot in patterns.

Last night, I went over to Nick (aka the Russian)’s to spin some records. He had misplaced wires and plugs, so we ended up fiddling with Reason for about 30 minutes. It was mostly him showing me stuff with it, as I hadn’t used it before. The end result was this little 3 measure beat he called wiki wiki ah mp3 (I think, secretly, because he had been listening to a lot of Aphrodite. And because he didn’t like my title suggestion of ‘Bloody Stump.’) It’s not amazing by any stretch, but for having never worked with anything but a eons old tracker 10 years ago, I would say it’s not a terrible first result for 20 minutes of knob turning.

And I’m saying it non-stop in person, so I might as well post it too: Obama/Edwards 08. I know Edwards isn’t admitting to being keen on the idea right now, but let’s fast forward a few months. It doesn’t hurt that most sane people would be very excited by this ticket. It almost seems impossible, the notion of being excited about politics, after 8 miserable years of shame and head-hanging and cursing.

This storm is supposed to go on until Monday at least.

You might be saying to yourself, “Well, thank goodness it is 2008 now and I don’t have to put up with anymore of those silly “top x” lists for another year.” You’d be correct, because what I have here is not a list. Oh no, my friends, it’s 4 hour-long mixes of the top songs of 2007. As decided by a guy named Eric in Indiana.

And sure, you can say, “Well, a guy I don’t know in Indiana doesn’t really mean anything. I don’t need to download his mixes. I’m going back to Superpoking on Facebook.” But before you do, look at the tracklistings: Spoon, !!!, Aesop Rock, LCD Soundsystem, Klaxons, Jay Z, Justice, Battles, M.I.A. and others. Sure, sure, you have rock cred and you already have all these songs already. But do you have them mixed by a guy named Eric in Indiana?

I thought so. So enjoy 4 hours of the best songs from last year.

if you enjoyed the diplo essential mix from a couple of months ago, check out the streetlife djs essential mix from friday night. a little tunage to help the hump day pass faster.

when your tracklisting includes: public enemy, the prodigy, n-joi, justice, michael jackson, daft punk, queens of the stone age, groove armada, size 9, eric b and rakim, hot chip, primal scream, lil louis, leftfield and slam — you’re doing something right.

(oh and bonus time — if you dig 90s electronic, check out audio.out. right now, he has re-posted 6 months worth of tracks — tasty treats if you dig english electronic music. (think leftfield, orbital, orb, pwei, red snapper, altern-8 and a bunch more.)

so, we are all aware that i have become more anal and exactly in trying to organize all the things i own. i have posted over the years on my attempts to wrangle my music files into some kind of manageable order.

anyway, a month or so ago, i found a link to a pdf called ‘managing your ipod with smart playlists’. its a heady document — clocking in around 20 pages of details on how to auto-magically rotate an ipod’s music when your main library is bigger than your ipod.

i know this won’t appeal to the majority of you. that’s ok. but i have been using this system for a little over a month now and and have been delighted by the results. you spend the 30 minutes to set the playlists up, you take a little time to rate songs and suddenly your listening experience just got a whole lot more enjoyable.

and while i’m talking up itunes, here are my top 10 songs, along with their number of plays. you know, just because:

1. underworld – jal to toyko (117)
2. tim deluxe – let the beats roll (86)
3. institute of technology – king of rock (75)
4. the game – it’s ok (one blood) (remix) (70)
5. dan le sac vs scrobious pip – thou shalt always kill (live on xfm) (63)
6. lcd soundsystem – losing my edge (63)
7. the streets – turn the page (60)
8. runaways uk – levitation (remix feat cyclops 4000) (55)
9. green velvet – genedefekt (51)
10. leslie winer – old school (rough mix unfinished) (51)

down the list includes kayne, the chemical brothers, u2, m.i.a, convenant, dirty beatniks, public enemy, pantera…what a weird list of music.

it isn’t what i would have picked for myself, though to be air, many of these songs were on my ‘workout’ playlist for several months, so they got overplayed because of it. (see: 2, 4 and 5) i’m amazed at the lead ‘jal to toyko’ has over the rest. 30 plays. thats serious. but looking at this list, it really reflects the last 3 years of my listening to music. nothing goes much farther back than that. id love to see my lifetime numbers.

what do your number say your top 10 are? and no fair making it up, because i bet your list is just as surprising as mine was. to me. i want hard numbers.

and credit where credit is due — i originally nabbed it from audio.out, but the file has since been pulled from there. i heartily recommend it for fun and obscure dance tracks, though he does seem to pull all files down at the start of every month and begin fresh. so grab them while you can.
