mike and i trade a lot of emails. most of his are genius-level funny; i wish he would post a lot of them — they are that funny.
along with the humor, he usually tells me to rent something or to get a videogame; recommendations i value and can listen to. ive known the guy since i was in diapers. i trust his opinion on almost anything.
a couple of weeks ago, i finally saw 'z-channel'. he had seen it already and had made the comment that the movies mentioned in the documentary were more interesting than the actual movie. he was right.
but for that, it produced a long list of other movies i am trying to work through in my netflix queue.
and then he writes and tells me to add 'danger: diabolik'. i listen. and then bump it up to the top of my queue. and last night, we watched it.
holy crap. this might, might be one of the most awesome movies ive ever seen. if i was still 15. as is, i wish i had seen it 15 years ago. but even seeing it now, it massaged a really nice spot of my brain.
first of all, i opened the netflix envelope and took out the dvd. this is what greeted me:

yes, this is a naked man, with a naked woman on him, surrounded by piles of cash.
this sold me in an instant. but if you arent convinced yet, i would like to let you know — this actually occurs in the movie. this isnt one of those lame 'conceptual' pieces of art that never happens.
if youre still not sold — remember the beastie boys' 'body movin' video? the absurd one thats like a crazy spy movie over stealing that recipe? no? remind your self by watching it here (win streaming) or here (youtube)
right. so. anytime you see something in that video where you cant see a beastie boys face, its footage from the movie. and it follows the middle part of the movie pretty closely — its one theft out of 3 or 4 that happen during the film.
youve gotta be sold now, right?
im telling you, the best, most insane 1:40 minutes youll spend in…well…forever.
a very very solid a. and thats only because i wont give an a+ to a film.
* * *
mike reminds me that diabolik was also used as the last film shown on mst3k. though i cant imagine how one could make fun of it. also, the beastie boys video is included on the dvd. and finally, its only 6.99 from amazon. so netflix it now. and if you cant, just suck it up and buy the damn thing.
