i just told chrispy this story on im, but why not make a post of it?
my musical tastes have evolved over a certain, measurable curve: top 40 to metal to industrial to rave and to electronic. since then, ive floated a bit between everything, gravitating to songs with strong beats and vocals. (see my favorites of the last many years: lcd soundsystem, underworld, etc.)
well, back in the day, in like 10th and 11th grade, i was all about the rave. i had consumed revolting cocks and ministry and kmfdm and front 242 and nin and was blown away by these tapes friends had of things like ‘rave til dawn’. none of my friends in high school actually listened to this stuff; i was exposed by friends outside of school. i was the lone rave kid.
anyway, one christmas, my friend nicole bought me a tape: ’speed limit 140 bpm plus 3′. it sounded like it would be awesome — fast tunes, none of which i knew. and then, after a month or two, i lost the tape. and so it has been for years. and then a week or two ago, i recalled it. (this is how it is — ive lost maybe 6 or 10 things in my life, tops. and i recall each one, painfully. a sweatshirt, a vcr tape, a mix tape, this tape, a blue dress shirt, a ring. anyway.)
i look up the album: speed limit 140 bpm+ 3: the joint. holy crap. the tracklisting is killer. its taken years and friends like chris to get me there, but i know all these songs. and thus, i kick my young self for losing the damn tape. if i knew these tracks back in 93 when i got the tape, i would have been so much cooler. at least in my head.
ah well, what can you do?
besides, i imagine that knowing sons of a loop da loop era, krome and time, omni trio, hype, hyper on experience, 2 bad mice, etc at age 16 wouldn’t have really made me that much cooler. but i can dream.

Oh man, I HAD RAVE ‘TIL DAWN!
Also, thank you for reminding me of the time my “rave friends” and I played Matrix on mute in sync with my TRANCE TRIPPIN’ c.d.
